Many of us have a special place where we go to feel safe and comfortable. A place where we can relax, chill, and be ourselves. For some, it may be hanging out with friends or co-workers. For others, being at home with family may be most relaxing. Fenet Guye loves family time, and she also feels safe and comfortable on campus. She values how everyone around her respects her privacy.
Fenet grew up in Ethiopia and moved to Saint Paul 18 months ago. Adjusting to different cultural norms in the US with her family has been challenging, but the transition to college has been relatively easy. Fenet came to America with a plan to pursue some combination of three career tracks: psychology, orthodontics, or business ownership. Following advisement from family and advisors, she quickly chose to focus on an Orthodontist career. This decision was strongly supported by her mother, who was hoping one of her children would become a doctor. She heard many positive things about SPC and chose to enter the Health Sciences Broad Field certificate program to start her first two years of college. Realizing her career ambition would necessitate 11 years of college, she enrolled in a community college to learn the fundamentals.
Fenet was excited to earn her first job in Public Dispatch at the Information Desk at SPC. Even though she was new to American culture and the workforce, she shared how the transition was made easy through the great staff at SPC, who helped train her for her 20-hour-per-week job.
Maintaining a 4.0 GPA, Fenet is embracing the start of her 11-year educational journey at Saint Paul College. She also has in the back of her mind to start her own Orthodontist business and establish opportunities for patients to receive more affordable dental services so they can be confident and healthy with their teeth. Her future is bright!
